Tiger Paw Student Handbook

MR. AND MS. UWA

Mr. and Ms. UWA are public relations representatives for the University of West Alabama.  These outstanding students have demonstrated a commitment to academics, campus involvement and service to the University community.  Being elected as Mr. or Ms. UWA is a significant honor at the University of West Alabama.

Each residence hall and recognized student organization may nominate one male student for Mr. UWA and one female student for Ms. UWA. Nomination forms must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs (Webb Hall 323) by Friday, February 5th at 4:30 p.m.  Each nominee must be a full-time junior or senior at UWA, taking a minimum of 12 semester hours.  Seniors that are taking the required number of credits to graduate by spring semester also qualify.    Nominees must have attended UWA for at least two semesters prior to the current semester.  Nominees must have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).  Nominees may not be on academic or disciplinary probation.  Nominees may not have previously served as Mr. or Ms. UWA.  The current Ms. UWA Pageant title holder may not run for Ms. UWA.

Mr. and Ms. UWA nominees must pick up a Mr. and Ms. UWA Candidate Application from the Office of Student Affairs by February 11th.  Candidate applications are due by Thursday, February 11th at 4:30 p.m.

Candidate applications will be reviewed by the Mr. and Ms. UWA Screening Committee approximately February 15th. The most outstanding candidates, based on campus involvement, academic standing and service to the university community, will be invited to an interview with the screening committee.

Personal interviews will be conducted on February 17th.  Candidate photographs will be taken at this time.  The screening committee will evaluate each candidate on campus involvement, interview skills, appearance, academics and school spirit.  The candidates will be ranked by the screening committee.  This ranking will count as 50% of the final decision for the selection of Mr. and Ms. UWA.  The top five candidates for Mr. UWA and top five candidates for Ms. UWA will be voted on by the student body.

An election for Mr. and Ms. UWA will be held on-line from Monday, February 22nd through Wednesday, February 24th.  All undergraduate and graduate students that are enrolled for at least six semester hours on the UWA campus in Livingston will be permitted to vote in the election.  Only verbal campaigning is permitted for the Mr. and Ms. UWA election.  Flyers, signs, mass e-mails and other marketing efforts are prohibited.

The votes by the student body will be used to rank the candidates.  An average of the election ranking and the screening committee ranking will result in the final Mr. and Ms. UWA selection.  The male candidate with the highest average ranking will represent the University of West Alabama as Mr. UWA.  The female candidate with the highest average ranking will represent the University as Ms. UWA.  The remaining students on the ballot will be designated as UWA Favorites.

Mr. and Ms. UWA are expected to appear in publicity photographs and may be asked to make public appearances on behalf of the University.
