EMERGENCY SERVICES
MEDICAL & POLICE EMERGENCIES
In case of a medical or police emergency of any type
immediately notify the University Police, ext. 3682, or direct at 652-3682, or
call 652-3602. They can assure you a rapid medical transportation response time
if the situation warrants.
For on-campus residents, in case of fire, pull the fire alarm
and proceed to the nearest exit. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR. The RA will inform you
as to more specific instructions concerning where your floor should meet once
you are outside. Fire drills are held once a semester in all residence halls. For
your safety, it is mandatory that you leave your building as quickly as
possible. When you hear the alarm sound, leave your room, closing the door
behind you. Once you are outside, please aid your RA in making sure everyone is
accounted for on your floor.
In the event of predicted hurricane or tornado
watch or warning, University officials will instruct you where to go. In such a
situation, it is important that we know your whereabouts. Please do not leave
without telling your roommate, RA, or hall director where you are going.
For off-campus students, you can call the Department of
Public Safety at 652-9525 for any emergency, whether for fire, police, or for
ambulance service.
WEATHER EMERGENCIES
(Also See Inclement Weather Policy)
A Tornado Watch means that conditions are right
for a tornado to form. When a Watch is announced for our area, all University
offices are notified by phone, signs are posted in residence halls, and the
information is broadcast on radio and cable TV Channel 4. Watches usually remain
in effect for several hours. Be prepared for power failures and make sure you
know what to do if conditions worsen.
A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been
spotted in our area and immediate action should be taken. When a Warning is
issued, sirens at Webb, the Student Union, and City Hall will sound. Go immediately to a first floor inner
hallway or room away from windows. If you are on campus, you will be given
directions to safest locations.
Although some buildings, because of their construction, offer
better protection than others, it is usually safest for a person to seek the
most sheltered area possible in the building in which he/she is located rather
than risk the danger of going outside to reach other buildings. Normally a
basement or ground floor corridor is the safest location. In moving to a safer
location, everyone should use stairs rather than elevators and should avoid
window areas.
The best shelters in the event of a tornado warning are:
-
Bibb Graves Hall First Floor Hallway
-
Brock Hall First Floor Hallway
-
Wallace Hall First Floor Hallway
-
Webb Hall First Floor Hallway
-
Student Union Building Basement
-
Moon Hall Hallway
-
Selden Hall Basement
-
Spieth Hall Basement
-
Sisk Hall First Floor Hallway
-
Stickney Hall First Floor Hallway
Areas which should be avoided if at all possible are:
-
Wallace Auditorium
-
Bibb Graves Auditorium
-
Young Cafeteria
-
Foust Hall Gymnasium
-
Pruitt Hall Gymnasium
-
Julia Tutwiler Library
-
Hunt Annex
The basement of the Student Union and Wallace Hall will be
open and can be used for shelter if you are outside or off-campus and you need
to move to a safer area. Tornado Warnings usually last 20 or 30 minutes and
there is NO "all-clear" signal. If the sirens sound again, another
Warning has been issued.
If you need emergency assistance, call UWA ext. 3602, or
652-3602.
