HEALTH SERVICES

The University of West Alabama Health Service is operated through an agreement with Dr. W.R. Simpkins, a local physician. Students may see Dr. Simpkins at his office on Highway 11, north of the campus. Dr Simpkins is available Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon and from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. On Wednesday and Friday, Dr. Simpkins is available from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Students may see Dr. Simpkins without an appointment. Students that wish to schedule an appointment should call 652-2686.

As the University physician, Dr. Simpkins sees students regarding routine matters. Neither the University physician nor any other University employee will issue medical excuses for missed classes. In the case of illness, each professor will determine whether to grant an excused absence to a student.

After normal office hours, and in case of emergencies, students needing medical attention should go to Hill Hospital in York. The University will not be able to provide transportation to the hospital, but will arrange for ambulance service, if requested. The student will be responsible for the expense for all hospital services and ambulance transportation, if applicable. On-campus residents should contact a Resident Assistant or their Hall Director if there is a medical emergency. The Housing staff member will contact campus police. The campus police officer will determine whether an ambulance should be called.

NOTE: If you have family health insurance coverage, be sure to have your insurance card so that you can use it if you need medical attention other than that provided by the University.

NOTE: If you need medical insurance, the Student Affairs Office has identified a company which we believe provides inexpensive coverage to college students. Information on this policy can be obtained from Mr. Buckalew at Webb Hall, Room #323.

Questions regarding student health services at The University of West Alabama should be directed to Mr. Danny Buckalew, Vice President for Student Affairs.
